Finally got around to signing up at the digitalpoint forums and found this interesting thread on someone who had increased their adsense revenue from US$10 to US$800 per week. I tend to agree with the approach of building a few really good sites that make a decent amount of money versus a large number of smaller sites that are less successful. The author also mentions some advice from Shoemoney on how it is good to build upon your original site with new sites in niches that are closely related, I can see a lot of benefits from doing that.

There was some controversy over google giving preference to some of its own products within search results. I dont think this is the right thing to do, imagine the money they could make by acquiring new companies and pushing them to the top of their search results. But they would also lose a lot of credibility as well. According to this post at techcrunch, they have stopped doing that. Once a company gets to the size of google, they come under all kinds of scrutiny and strict standards, like those imposed on Microsoft.

Performancing/PayperPost deal off

by ian on January 5, 2007

PayPerPost.com had intentions to purchase a part of Performancing.com which appeared to be unprofitable and was rumored to be shut down by Performancing. However, the deal did not go ahead, and after reading this article at Techcrunch, you will see why it is always a good idea to keep the transactions of any deal secret, until they are fully complete. On payperposts side, their credibility could be somewhat dimished and they could be taken less seriously in future negotiations. On the side of performancing.com well, their chances for the sale of the side of the business they were trying to sell, is also diminished, as other potential buyers would be asking the reason why payperpost pulled out of the deal. Another very important reason to keep the details of any deal secret until they are set in concrete, is you dont want some other party entering into negotiations and you being gazumped.

Benefits of Yahoo using Google advertising

by ian on January 4, 2007

This is a rather interesting article on why Yahoo should surrender and use Google advertising, in much the same way as a number of other smaller search engines have. It mentions that as a result, Yahoo could increase their average search revenue from $0.10 to $0.17 adding US$1.5 billion to their bottom line. I cant see this ever happening in the immediate feature, I think we are still in the early stages where each major player Google, Yahoo and MSN will continue to do battle for market supremacy. I would also not like to see this ever happen from a webmaster point of view, as the Yahoo Publisher Network is a viable alternative to Google adsense and serves to keep Adsense competitive and maintaining a decent revenue share split with their publishers. Currently the revenue share percentage is not openly disclosed and is just the subject of speculation.

Read this article over at lifehack, which provided six tips for improving your blog. One of the most important tips is to allow comments, what makes blogs so popular, is that readers can interact with the author and also other readers. Due to blog spam, there is a tendency to want to disallow comments, but using the akismet anti-spam plugin that comes as a standard plugin with wordpress, spam is now effectively handled and there is no need to switch comments off.

Sale of domain Announce.com for $90,000

by ian on January 2, 2007

According to the dnjournal weekly sales report, the domain Announce.com sold for US$90,000. With recent high domain sales, and given the high quality of the domain name, being a dictionary .com domain, that is hardly surprising. What I found very interesting was that the domain was purchased two and a half years ago via a forum for US$5,000. That is certainly a very nice return on investment.

As a webmaster, I like to find out my rankings for certain keywords via the major search engines. msn’s search engine live.com kept defaulting to local australian results. The way to get US results is on the live.com homepage, click on the options link and select your language and region as English (United States).
